When Lauren Enge decided to foster a dog named Kahuna, she had no idea that the pooch was pregnant. She was studying for her midterms when Kahuna went into labor, and this sweet foster mom dropped everything to help Kahuna give birth to eight beautiful puppies.
A pregnant foster
There are different ways we can help dogs in need. For the 20-year-old Lauren Enge, her means of choice is fostering. Despite being busy with her studies at UCLA, Lauren makes time volunteering for Woof On Campus, a nonprofit organization that connects students to rescues in need.
While studying for midterms, Lauren decided to take in a new foster, a sweet dog named Kahuna. She noticed that Kahuna was gaining weight quickly, so she suspected that the dog might be pregnant. Lauren took Kahuna to the vet for a pregnancy test, and her suspicions were confirmed. Kahuna was indeed about to become a mom!
According to Lauren, she and her friends were in the middle of studying for their midterms exams when Kahuna showed signs of labor. Lauren saw in Kahuna’s eyes that the dog was scared. Wanting to reassure the nervous pooch, Lauren cheered on Kahuna while pushing the first puppy out.
Kahuna glanced up at Lauren with pride and joy when the first puppy came out as if telling her foster mom that she was okay. The puppies came out one by one, and each time, Kahuna would look at Lauren with such love in her eyes.
A beautiful goodbye
Kahuna gave birth to eight beautiful puppies, and Lauren could not be any prouder. Kahuna turned out to be a sweet and loving mom, and all her puppies grew healthy and happy.
Eventually, all of Kahuna’s puppies went to loving families and Lauren’s fostering stint for Kahuna was about to end. But before she bids Kahuna farewell, she decided to give the mama dog a beautiful send-off. She took Kahuna to the beach, where the dog had so much fun playing with the sand.
Saying goodbye to Kahuna was an emotional moment for Lauren, but she’s also happy for the memories and lessons she got from this experience. She’s confident that Kahuna would go to a loving family one day. Meanwhile, she wishes to encourage everyone who has the capacity to foster to take in animals in need. Although the arrangement is only temporary, giving these animals the love they deserve can have immense impacts on their lives.
