Time is such an abstract concept. When we look at our watch or the big clock on our wall, we’re not really looking at the time. Rather, we are looking at an instrument that tells us what’s supposed to be the time in accordance with everyone else, and time itself only exists in our minds.
So, does this mean that the concept of time is not only for us, humans? It’s not impossible as there are other ways to tell time than just looking at a clock. There was a study featured by the BBC regarding dogs and the concept of time. It begged to ask, can dogs tell time?
The premise is that dogs can tell time, but of course, they don’t do it by looking at clocks. Instead, they have their own way of determining how much time has elapsed from point A to point B. They use their keen sense of smell. Apparently, our scent fades away, several hours after we leave our homes.
When this happens, this serves as a reminder for our dogs that we are about to come back home from work or school. In the video below, the Labrador is waiting for her best bud, Jonathan, to come back from school. Jonathan’s mom noticed this behavior from their pup, and she decided to film it for the world to see.
For this pup, however, she could also be using audio and visual clues. The sound and sight of the bus in the afternoon serves as her reminder that Jonathan is about to come home. She always waits patiently, but soft sighs suggest that she is worried that her human is not home yet.
But as scheduled, Jonathan comes home at a certain time. Once Jonathan enters the door, the ecstatic Labrador is becomes filled with energy that she zips up and down the staircase like the Flash. This is a sweet reminder that when we come home, that is the highlight of their day.
