When a child goes missing, it’s understandable that parents are scared to death about it. Not only are they worried about their child being abducted, but they also fear for their child’s health and safety. Many kids and toddlers go missing well into the night, which means they have to brave the freezing temperatures, too.
In Mason City, Iowa, this unfortunate incident took place recently. Luckily for the 2-year-old boy and his family, it didn’t take long before they found him. The boy’s parents explained that they were doing yard work with the boy and their dog lounging around. They looked away for a moment, and when they checked on them, the boy and the pup were gone.
The parents immediately called 911 for some help. The Cerro Gordo County Sherrif’s Office responded immediately, even flying a drone around the perimeter to help locate the boy. But despite their advanced equipment, they couldn’t find him. So they called for assistance from the Mason City Police K9 unit.
Officer Duane Kemna and his K9 partner Kilo responded to the call. Officer Kemna explained that as soon as they went to work, Kilo was able to lock on to the boy’s scent. The police pooch was walking quickly, as explained by Officer Kemna, which suggests that she was on to something.
Kilo led the search crew to the neighbor’s house along a creek, 0.6 miles away from their home. They went around the back of the house, and there, they found the 2-year-old and his trusty pet dog. The toddler took off his clothes, which suggests that he fell into the creek.
Officer Kemna immediately gave his jacket to the freezing boy and brought him back to his parents. Despite being frightened and cold, the young boy didn’t need any medical attention. Authorities explained that Kilo was able to find the boy right away because his parents called 911 immediately.
