Dogs born with disabilities are often caused by bad breeding. Because of this, a lot of dogs are needlessly abandoned and euthanized. However, there are people who are willing to step up and adopt these dogs.
A woman named Haley Justice adopted a deaf and blind dog named Maise and gave her the best life. Because of her special needs, Haley knew that she needed to come up with a new way to teach Maisie a way to communicate. You’ll probably wonder how Haley would be able to teach a deaf and blind dog.
When Maisie was at a very young age, Haley started training her by using touch as a way to communicate with her. We have to remember that puppies love to play and they will also do whatever is asked of them to get treats.
So, Haley started associating specific touches on Maisie’s body as commands. When she wanted Maisie to sit, Haley would tap on Maisie’s thigh. When Maisie sat, she would get treats from Haley. For Maisie, it’s a fun game with great rewards.
Like most special needs dogs, Maisie’s condition is a result of bad breeding. Maisie is a double merle dog where two dogs with merle coats are bred, which often result in having one in four of the litters to become double merle. They are prone to having vision and hearing problems, which is what Maisie has.
The condition is easily preventable by avoiding breeding two merle dogs together. Despite having no sight or hearing, Maisie doesn’t know any different. She’s a fearless dog who loves to explore her environment. She completely trusts Haley, and she also loves the beach.
Thanks to Haley, Maisie is living a beautiful life. Even without hearing or vision, she still enjoys life, and she loves to play. Here’s a video showing how a deaf and blind dog learned to communicate thanks to a very patient and caring human mom.
