One infectiously goofy and adventurous three-year-old pit bull named Pirate is taking on the challenge to change the misconceived image about pit bulls like him and other bully breeds. He is doing that through his Instagram account known as Pirate the Pit Bull which has now close to 100,000 followers. And it looks like Pirate is winning a lot of hearts.
Pirate was rescued by Asha Leo from a shelter in Los Angeles when he was just seven months old. Leo who is a sexual assault survivor adopted Pirate as a task-trained assistance service dog as she suffers from depression. Aside from that, she also experiences constant fear whenever she travels alone for her work. And Pirate has been an absolute gift in her life.
Having Pirate and taking care of him taught Leo a lot on how to take care of herself. He also has been her constant support, always loyally by her side and someone who always has her back.
When Leo started Pirate’s Instagram account, she mainly just wanted to share photos and videos of him with family and friends and she never expect that Pirate would earn so much more fans. Seeing his popularity grow, Leo took the chance to advocate for him as well as other bully breeds who are mistakenly known as aggressive.
She wanted to show them how extraordinarily kind and sweet these dogs are and how they deserve to live their best lives with a loving home and family. With Pirate’s Instagram account, Leo tries to show how happy and fun-loving Pirate is and their many adventures together over the years.
She also highlights how these dog breeds are loyal, intelligent, and trainable and that Pirate himself has an impressive list of certifications from the American Kennel Club. Aside from those, they’re also very athletic. According to Leo, she has seen a lot of disbelief looks from people whenever she tells them how Pirate is a regular participant in agility, nose work, and even rally competitions.
Lastly, Leo aims to help raise awareness about breed-specific legislations most especially against pit bulls who have been numerously denied entrance in buildings, towns, and even countries. She hopes that by showing Pirate to the world, more people would become more educated about them and see the good boys and girls that they really are.
