Some dogs become long term shelter residents because of certain aspects. Some are too old, some have injuries, while others have not been socialized and don’t play well with others. Most adopters don’t want dogs that are considered high maintenance. While a lot of adopters have a specific type of dog in mind, some are kind enough to choose shelter dogs that need help the most. Whatever the case may be, all shelter dogs deserve to find a good home.
Bonita’s story reflects perfectly in this situation. She is the longest resident of the Niagara SPCA in New York, having spent over 500 days there. As a large breed dog with no social skills, Bonita required an adopter with no small children or any other dogs living with them. Bonita was kind of selfish when it came to her people. It was difficult to find her a match.
500 days of shelter
For almost two years, Bonita watched people pass her and go to other dogs. One by one, her neighboring dogs would get picked and sent home with a new family. New dogs would come in, but they would go out before her. It didn’t seem that Bonita would ever have her turn.
Until one fateful day, a guy walked into the shelter and had eyes only for Bonita. He told shelter volunteers of his intent to adopt Bonita. So they discussed her specific requirements. He didn’t mind giving her what she needs; he knows that he has the perfect home for the overstaying dog. He went through the adoption process and made it official. Bonita was going home with him.
Everyone in the shelter was overjoyed with the good news. Finally, Bonita is being adopted. As Bonita walks out of the shelter doors for the last time, everyone lined up outside to say goodbye. They cheered her name and threw confetti in the air as the dog walked among them. Bonita was so happy to see all her friends cheering her on. The delighted pooch jumped and wagged her tail as she approaches her friends. She is now going home to a new life with her new dad.
