For many months, Wang Xinchun prepared himself for the biggest bicycle road trip of his life. His journey will take him from the Hebei province to the Tibet Autonomous Region. But along the way, he met a gentle dog and fell in love with him. He adopted the pooch and gave him a second chance in life.
The trip
Wang had prepared well for his more than 10,000-kilometer journey. He outfitted two plastic boxes on the back of his bike for everything that he would need for his trip. Plus, the weather was very cooperative. For the first few weeks, he didn’t encounter any major problems.
When the cyclist arrived in a small town, he met a stray dog. He was in terrible condition. He was bleeding in his lower extremities, had a lot of wounds due to a skin condition, and his paws were very swollen. But the worst part is that the pooch was paralyzed.
According to the locals, the dog got into a car accident and he never received any medical attention. Everyone just assumed that he would perish soon. But the pup was resilient, he even kept his gentle demeanor. This impressed Wang a lot. But because he was on his dream trip, he couldn’t take the dog with him.
Turn around
The next day, Wang continued his journey. He couldn’t get the dog out of his mind though. He kept on thinking about the pooch and debating whether he should take him along. 30 miles outside the city, he made the decision to turn around.
He found the dog again and named him Bittermelon. He took the pooch to a vet where they prescribed him medication for his condition. Tragically though, the vets said that the injury to the spine was too extensive that the dog would not get his mobility back on his rear legs.
For the next 12 months, the two traveled together. They went to lakes, valleys, mountains, deserts, and grasslands. Every day they shared their food and slept by each other’s side. Wang would also give him his medication and would massage his rear legs regularly.
Home
When their journey was over, they went back home and Wang gave Bittermelon his wheelchair. He also built a wooden house for him. According to the cyclist, adopting the stray dog was the best decision he ever made.
He found his best friend and the best support he could ever have.
