Nobody could tell for sure if this little guy had Chihuahuas for parents, but he certainly looked like one even if he was a few sizes bigger. One of the employees at the building where he hung around a lot somehow got him to trust her, thanks to the numerous occasions she offered him hot dogs. Although knowing her did not convince him to trust the rescuer who had come to collect him, it still helped that he knew someone there.
He didn’t run or try to hide from them, but he was hesitant to come anywhere near them. He saw the food, and that was enough to hold his attention, but not enough to make him close the distance between himself and the rescuer. They opted to take their time rather than risk spooking him into trying to escape because he was small enough to fit between the bars of the building’s steel fences.
The tried using a gentle snare to capture him by leaving food on a particular spot on the floor as bait. The moment he got close enough, they pulled on the snare to try to fasten it around his neck, but he was too fast. After that plan failed, they decided to use a cage trap with food in it, but he was far too light to set off the switch that would close the door.
With a little adjustment using bottled water, they tried again. And this time, the combined weight of the dog and the bottled water was just enough to trigger the switch for closing the door. The dog ran around in circles inside the cage for several seconds, and it seemed like no amount of comforting would satisfy him.
He eventually calmed down, and they took that as their queue to bring pick up the cage and bring it to their automobile. And that put an end to his being homeless, although, at the time, he didn’t have a permanent home yet. Hopefully, he wouldn’t have to wait for more than a few weeks to find a new family — but for now, he was off the streets.
