After a 10-day-old kitten wound up in a veterinary clinic with severe injuries to its hind leg and tail, it was clear that she would need an amputation. Even though the injuries required immediate attention, the veterinarians hesitated on operating on a young kitten. Besides being ten days old, this kitten had also weighed in at under a pound.
The vets realized they needed to decide to give the kitten, now named Peggy, another shot at life. Veterinary nurse Kate Hayes said on Instagram that the only other option was euthanasia, but since she was fighting hard, they would never do that. Kate continued, saying that they had to amputate the leg soon because the leg was severely infected and might as well be dying and having a chance of her going into sepsis.
Rescuers weren’t sure if Peggy, or Pegleg, would live, and they were surprised to find out that she made it through the procedure. Kate said that she didn’t have high hopes about Peggy surviving with her being young and small. Kate continued saying that Peggy is fantastic, saying that she is the youngest kitten they have ever done surgery on, nevermind it being a large orthopedic one.
Kate took her home to recover; this is where the little cat immediately bonded with Kate’s dog Moon. Moon is a pup that loves helping his mom out with nursing her furry patients back to health. Kate told Love Meow that if an animal is hurting, crying, or is sick, Moon would be beside them and cry with them. She said that he has such a kind nature.
The caring dog sniffed Peggy a few times and promptly laid down by her side. Like a good nurse, he will immediately run over when he hears her crying and comfort her.
On Peggy’s end, she has improved under Moon’s unconditional love. She has finally put on some healthy weight and is getting stronger every day. Moon is such a loving and caring brother to Peggy.
