Every day is a struggle when your dog goes missing. Pet owners can’t help but worry and wonder when they’ll return.
Dianne Ramsey, 71, was away from her pet Yorkie for only four days, but it felt like a lifetime.
Sasha, a 15-year-old Yorkshire Terrier, was stolen from Ramsey’s New Orleans porch. Ramsey, who has vascular dementia, was heartbroken by the news. But, as it turns out, the “thief” was not the person they expected. Instead, the entire incident was the result of a misunderstanding on both sides.
Sasha is Ramsey’s closest friend. The puppy is always by her mother’s side and does a fantastic job of soothing her.
Ramsey’s daughter, Letreion Clements, let Sasha out in the yard one day. Sasha typically stays in the yard, goes potty, and then paws at the door to go inside. But, because Sasha had never scratched at the door, Letreion Clements went outside to look for her. That’s when she realized the tiny puppy had disappeared.
When the family checked the surveillance footage, they discovered something alarming. A woman approached the porch with food in her hand, attempting to attract the dog’s attention. She appeared to push the doorbell and then led Sasha to her car and drove away. Ramsey was so upset that she refused to sit on the porch without her canine pal.
Intending to reunite Sasha with her family, Clements contacted authorities and disseminated “lost dog” flyers. But the puppy was far closer than they had anticipated.
On the same day, Sasha went lost, an unknown woman brought her to the Louisiana SPCA. The woman in the video mistook Sasha for a stray and brought her to the shelter. The woman added that she spotted Sasha shivering on the porch and was concerned for her safety. Sasha lacked identification tags, but shelter employees spotted one of the missing dog flyers four days later.
During her time at the SPCA, Sasha was given a comprehensive vet examination. They noticed that both of her ears were infected and provided complementary treatment for them. Sasha was also implanted with a microchip and an identity tag to ensure she would never go missing again.
Sasha and her mother were both delighted to see each other. To make up for a lost time, the scruffy Yorkie lavished her mommy with licks and cuddles. And Ramsey had the biggest smile on the planet.
Before Ramsey left, the shelter staff reminded her that any dogs outside of Louisiana must be leashed. They offered her a movable fence to keep Sasha on her porch to make things easier for her. Both Clements and Ramsey agreed to keep a tight check on the dog at all times.
