Thanksgiving – a day we celebrate the blessings we received throughout the year. But while Thanksgiving is a day of celebration for many, it quickly turned into one horrifying experience for one Grass Valley man.
Kaleb Benham, with his baby, a rescue Pit Bull named Buddy, were in their Grass Valley home when tragedy struck. It was the night before Thanksgiving, and Buddy was playing outside the house. Everything was going great until Kaleb heard a terrifying growl.
Buddy, the Pit Bull, had encountered a 350-pound bear. While Pit Bulls are fearless and tough, they are nothing compared to an adult bear who wants nothing more than to eat. And believe us when we say you don’t want to get in the way of a hungry bear and his food.
The bear had targeted Buddy and was planning to make a meal out of him. Thankfully for the Pit Bull, his owner, Kaleb, wasn’t going to let the bear get away with his baby without a fight. Despite the danger of taking on a 350-pound bear head-on, Kaleb didn’t think twice to save Buddy.
All Kaleb could think of that time was to save his baby. According to him, if it was your baby, what would you do? He chose to take on the bear and risk his life for Buddy.
As Kaleb saw the bear dragging Buddy’s head with its mouth, Kaleb rushed outside and plowed through the bear. He grabs the bear by the throat and punches it repeatedly until it let go of Buddy. But after successfully fending off the bear, Buddy wasn’t out of the woods just yet. His face injuries were so severe that he needed to be brought to the hospital as soon as possible.
Mother Lode Veterinary Hospital was ready to perform surgery on Buddy when he went through their doors. It took them four hours, tons of staples, stitches, and tubes inserted into his face to drain fluid. Kaleb stood there for four hours, watching through the window, wanting to make sure that his baby was going to be okay. Thankfully, the surgery was a success, and Buddy was on his way to recovery.
