It was a legen—wait for it—dary! holiday at the Burtka-Harris household when actor Neil Patrick Harris and his husband David welcomed the newest and most adorable family member last year.
Harris and Burtka, together with their ten-year-old twins Harper and Gideon, already have two dogs named Gidget and Spike. But for Christmas last year, they decided to extend their family of four even further. An extraordinary gift awaited them under the tree in the form of another adorable puppy they chose to call Ella.
On his Instagram account, the 47-year-old actor uploaded a photo of him and his kids in matching Christmas-themed-pajamas, posing together with their darling golden retriever. He narrates the story behind the picture through the caption, saying that he and his husband watched their twins open up a box with the puppy. He also happily says that she has taken over their lives.
Curious, clumsy, and sublime…this is how the How I Met Your Mother actor describes the newest addition to their family. Except, of course, when she’s peeing everywhere and gnawing on everything. Harris ponders that they might need training—but at that moment, he wants to cuddle with her. He ends by thanking Santa for his gift, saying he rules–#grateful.
Ella has attracted a lot of attention from Harris’s followers. Ordinary folk and celebrities such as Good Girls actress Christina Hendricks and Andrew Zimmern had nothing but well-wishes to the latest member of the Burtka-Harris household. Ella joins the pack together with Gidget and Spike, both of whom are rescue dogs.
The couple recently appeared in People magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive issue, where they talked about their dogs and what life in quarantine looks like. Harris says that having dogs you can cuddle with and who provides you with unconditional love during these times is very important. Burtka adds that the walks they take with their dogs every day have been excellent, and they love it. He shares further that there’s nothing like the walks that they take with family and the happiness it brings.
